“Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame Psalm 34:5

Daily DevotionalAs we drove to Davlekano, Russia, I was filled with mixed emotions. This was the place where my mother had spent the first 15 years of her life. But during the Russian revolution, her family had fled to Canada and no relative had been back since then. I prayed that the Lord would connect me with someone who would remember our family. He answered in an amazing way.

At one of our meetings in Ufa, Russia, we were introduced to Romano, a pastor who offered to drive us to Davlekano and show us around the town. As we came near, he invited us to have lunch at their house and we readily agreed. First we stopped at a local store and bought a gift for his wife and found a bag of homemade cookies that were just like the ones my mother used to bake.

When we came to their house, Tanya, his wife, greeted us with a very friendly smile. She radiated Jesus Christ. Three years before she and her husband came to faith in Christ and their love for Him and others was very evident.

Tanya served us a wonderful lunch of salads, cucumbers, brown and white bread, potato soup, cookies and tea. The table was wobbly and the house was old, but clean. And it was obvious she worked hard to prepare for our visit.

I learned a lesson that day. It is not the beautiful home or elaborate preparations that make a person feel good about being in another’s home. It is the spirit of the people living in the home.

She was radiant and very welcoming. This woman, from another country, welcomed us like Christ would welcome us – like a mother welcoming us home.

We didn’t find my mother’s house, but we found love.

Father God, free us from the competition when we invite guests to our homes. Help us to welcome people with warmth and love. Help us to radiate and reflect You. Amen.

Listen to the blessing of the Lord in Timothy 4:22. “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.” “But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, ‘O God, God of the spirits of all mankind…‘ ” (Numbers 16:22).

I bless you in the name of the God of the spirits of all mankind. The Lord who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundation of the earth is forms the spirit of man. He stirs up your spirit and moves your spirit. In his providence he watches over your spirit, so commit your spirit to your Father and creator (Psalms 35:15). I bless you with the knowledge that God gave you life and shows you his unfailing love, and he preserves your life and times by his care (Job 10:12).

Beloved child, listen with your spirit to 1 Corinthians 15:45. “The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.”
1 Corinthians 6:17 states, “But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.” Our Lord Jesus prayed for you, that you may be one, just as the Father was in him and he is in you. Be blessed, for the Lord Jesus has given you the glory that Father God gave him, so that you may be one as they are one (John 17:20-23). I bless you with uniting yourself with the Lord Jesus, with being one with him in spirit and being life-giving to all you meet. I bless you with spiritual fervor, that you may speak and the things of God and be diligent and enthusiastic in serving him, being one with him and devoted to him in spirit, soul, and body (Acts 18:25, Romans 12:11,
1 Corinthians 7:34
).

The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joint and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” I bless you with being able to distinguish your spirit from your soul, differentiating between the thoughts of your spirit and the attitudes of your soul. I bless you with responding to situations and circumstances from the depths of your spirit, not from your soul. I bless you with being humble, contrite, and repentant, so that you will be revived and renewed in heart and spirit by the Holy One, who inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57:15). When you are overwhelmed and your spirit grows faint, I bless you with assurance that he knows the way you should go (Psalms 142:3). I bless you with the confidence that when you call for help, and the Father of your spirit hears you, because he is close to the brokenhearted and rescues those who are crushed in spirit (Psalms 34:18).

I bless your spirit with being refreshed by others who are faithful to you, and I bless you with often refreshing others in their spirits (1 Corinthians 16:18, 2 Corinthians 7:13). I bless you with the spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline given by God, not of timidity or fear (2 Timothy 1:7).

I bless you with glorifying God in your body and your spirit, which are God’s, because you are bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20 NKJV). I bless you with praying and singing and praising God with your spirit
(1 Corinthians 14:14-16). I bless you with exalting the Lord and rejoicing in God your Savior with your spirit, as you celebrate his choosing you and recall all the great things he has done for you (Luke 1:46-49). I bless you with worshiping the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). I bless you in the name of the God of the spirits of all mankind.

“Stop! Samuel said to Saul “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night. 1 Samuel 15:16

We found it by accident. After a brisk winter walk in a park north of New York City, we were ready for a hot cup of tea or coffee. After parking the car, we began walking toward the town center. And there it was—a cozy tea room with small tables, friendly wait staff and quietly conversing customers. The thick menu described hundreds of teas and several appetizing food items. With our selections finally made and the aromatic brews poured, we visibly relaxed. With a plaintive sigh, our daughter asked, “Why don’t I stop for this every day? She is a high school teacher and her many responsibilities and relationships seem to fill every waking moment.

Time for a cup of tea—or coffee or hot chocolate—may not involve any beverage at all. The importance of the ritual involves stopping. For the follower of Jesus, stopping is crucial—stopping the whirl of activities, stopping the ever-present household or career responsibilities, stopping well-meant ministry. Just stopping. Stopping to hear and drink in the quiet voice of God.

We read that Jesus often left the crowds with their deep physical and spiritual needs to stop. He even stepped away from his disciples to whom He would soon entrust the Kingdom. We must do no less. When will you stop for your cup of tea today?

Lord, stopping seems so unproductive! I have been trained to believe that to stop means an interruption in moving forward toward success. Please continue to remind me that I will only hear “what the Lord said to me if I stop.

“What we know is that when Christ is openly revealed, we’ll see him— and in seeing him, become like himâ€?.
1 John 3:2, (The Message)

A good friend of mine recently died after a long bout with cancer and an extended stay in a care facility. Strange as it may seem, when I heard the news of her death, my first reaction was, “Heaven will be no surprise for her. She’s been living for years in the presence of Jesus.

My last visit with Susan—just two weeks before her death—was just like all my other visits. Her first question was about what God was doing in my life. Her face, now thin from the ravages of disease, was lit with a brilliant smile. Susan’s work with international students through the years was continuing as she met twice weekly with one of the kitchen staff who wanted to improve her English. She spoke lovingly by phone every day with her mother whose confused mind was withering because of senile dementia. She asked if we could pray—not for herself but for her patient, tired and loving husband. “This is so hard for him, she said.

When Susan stopped breathing the air of earth, I know she swelled with love at the sight of her Savior. She had been becoming like Him for a long time. Heaven wasn’t really a surprise; she had lived its reality for years.

Father God, help me look longingly at you each day and live increasingly like you so that when I see you face to face, I will not be surprised, only overcome with joy.

“Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. Proverbs 3:5&6

Cathy knew there was something wrong.
Even though her daughter Becky was an adult and lived out of state, Cathy still had a mother’s instinct.
Their last phone conversation left her unsettled.

She soon discovered Becky had an extramarital affair.  Her husband threatened divorce.

Cathy so wanted to save Becky from the sorrow and suffering ahead.
But she couldn’t.

Most of all, Cathy longed to see her daughter receive Jesus into her
heart and life.

She couldn’t MAKE that happen either.  So this burdened mother prayed.

Oh, dear friend, there are limitations to what you can do for your children.

So recognize your limitations, share God’s love at every opportunity, and pray daily for them.

In God’s timing you will see results.
Becky is now telling others how Christ saved her marriage!

Question:  Do you have a situation in your family which looks impossible?
Place it in the Lord’s hands.

The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go the land I will show you – I will bless you – and you will be a blessing…”  Genesis 12:1

It made no “common sense” for Susan to submit a resignation. She had recently received a promotion. She is multi-talented, recognized in her field as an expert. Her creative genius is seen in many multi-million dollar homes in the area. On a personal level, she has been mentor, friend and encourager to those just starting out in the design field.

So why is she resigning? Some might say she is running from what had become an increasingly difficult work environment. Others would wonder if she’s lost the competitive edge so necessary in much of the business world. Or could it be that she—as a Christ-follower—has simply heard Him say, “It’s time to move on. I have something else for you now.?

To leave a position, place or situation when God says, “Go”, is often misunderstood. Sometimes even the one leaving wonders if this “makes sense”. Long ago one man heard such a word from God, and his willingness to follow was miraculously turned into blessing that follows us even today. It made no “common sense” to leave the comfort of home and family, to give up that which provided security, but Abram went and became a blessing.

And so goes Susan. The blessing is not yet seen, but God never calls without purpose and plan.

“Thank you, Father, that we can trust your call in our lives. Help us be sensitive to your voice and faithful to follow”.

Listen to the blessing of the Lord. Philemon 25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” “How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!” (Hebrews 12:9).

Listen to Zechariah 12:1. “The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundations of the earth, and who forms the spirit of man within him…” Ezekiel 36:26 says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.”

I bless you with the understanding that your Creator, your heavenly Father, created and formed your spirit. I bless you with realizing that the very essence of who you are was placed deep within your spirit. There you carry the DNA of your heavenly Father. I bless you with a lifetime and lifestyle of discovering the character and nature of your Father and Christ in you the hope of glory. In discovering who God is, you uncover and awaken your spirit to who you are in him. I bless you with the good gift of God of an undivided heart, right desires, and a new spirit. I bless you with singleness and tenderness of heart to obey God as one who is truly his (Ezekiel 11:19, 18:31, 36:26).

Beloved child, I bless you with distinguishing yourself from those of this world because of the excellent spirit, knowledge, and understanding your Father has placed within you (Daniel 5:12, 6:3). It is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives you understanding (Job 32:8). I bless you with being an example to the others in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV).

Be blessed with realizing your need for God, for he promises that the kingdom of heaven will be given to you (Mathew 5:3). I bless you with being steadfast and fixed upon God (Psalms 51:10). I bless you with the presence of the Holy Spirit who restores to you the joy of your salvation and makes you willing to live consistently in obedience to him and in harmony with him (Psalms 51:12). I bless you with commitment to guard your spirit to keep godly covenants with family members (Malachi 2:15-16).

Be blessed with a spirit in whom there is no deceit (Psalms 32:2). I bless you with a spirit that is totally committed to the God of truth (Psalms 31:5.) Be blessed with the inner unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight (1 Peter. 3:4). I bless you with becoming strong in spirit, filled with wisdom and the grace of God (Luke 2:40 NKJV). You are blessed in the name of the Father of your spirit (Hebrews 12:9).

Remember the TV commercial for potato chips that challenged:
Bet you can’t eat just one.”
That’s what Steve Brown said to an audience recently.
Telling others about Jesus  you just can’t stop with one.  (SMILE)

Jay was there when he heard Steve speak on evangelism.
He wanted to begin telling others right away.
So together, Steve and Jay approached a distraught man on the beach.
Now it was winter and the driver had his heater on and windows rolled up.
But they knocked on the window and the man was curious enough to listen.
Steve presented the FOUR SPIRITUAL LAWS http://www.thoughts-about-god.com/4laws/law0.html to him and he prayed to invite Christ into his life.
The man had been there to commit suicide!  Now he had eternal life.

Yes, friend, the first time you tell someone about Jesus is memorable.  But don’t stop with just one!

“I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am  John 14:2,3

Waiting in the arrivals area of an airport can be a wonderful experience. One Saturday, I was in the Vancouver airport, waiting for the arrival of an airplane from Hong Kong. My husband (along with a team) had spent two weeks in Sumatra, Indonesia delivering medical supplies, water filters and funds to help build fishing boats. And now, he was coming home. I was so excited to see him.

I arrived early so I had time to observe people’s faces as they came through the doors into the arrivals area. As they came around the corner, their eyes would search for the faces of their loved ones who were there to meet them. When they saw each other and their eyes met, their faces would break out in great big smiles and they would run into each others arms. Husbands and wives. Parents and children. Grandparents and grandchildren. Young lovers.

They would be totally oblivious to anyone around but were focused on each other – the ones they were longing to meet and see their faces beaming with joy!

I thought to myself, “This must be a foreshadowing of what it will be like when we see Jesus and the ones who have gone to heaven before us. We will be focused on Christ alone. He will meet us with love and open arms. He will be waiting for us!”

Won’t that be glorious? The words of a hymn written by Charles Gabriel seems apropos:

Oh, that will be glory for me,
Glory for me, glory for me,
When by His grace I shall look on His face,
That will be glory, be glory for me.

Soon, I saw Marvin coming through the door and it was our turn to embrace and kiss – totally oblivious to anyone else. His homecoming was so great! It was so good to see him.

Our home coming to heaven will be even better. We will see Jesus!

Dear Father, thank You that Jesus is preparing a place for us and we will be there soon. That will be glory for us! I love You Jesus. Amen.

The resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s…greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa“  Romans 8:15 (The Message)

It was the early 1990’s. A room full of teachers sat at long wooden tables in a dimly lit, stuffy room. Magazines lay in disorderly piles on the tables along with glue, several pair of scissors, and large sheets of blank white paper. The instructions were simple: cut out pictures illustrating your view of the character of God and paste the pictures onto the paper, forming a collage.

After a few moments of silence, the teachers – accustomed, of course, to totalitarian-induced obedience – began the project and within thirty minutes, several large posters were complete.

Although the project organizers suspected what might be the general direction of the participants’ choices, they were amazed at the volatility expressed. No cute baby pictures, no frothy clouds, no pastoral scenes. Instead, the formerly blank sheets had overlapping cut outs of atomic explosions, mutilated bodies, storm-ravaged houses, bloody slaughterhouse scenes.

These were people who had not yet heard of the “tender mercy of our God“. (Luke 1:78), or “the kindnesses of the Lord” (Psalm 63:7). They didn’t know that God longed to be known as a tender, loving “Abba,” or “Papa” as Eugene Peterson translates in the word the The Message.

What pictures would you have cut out of the magazines? In Abba’s Child, Brennan Manning writes that we who are Christians have the same relationship with God as Jesus had. “He invites and calls us to share the same intimate and liberating relationship”.

How magnetic our lives could be if we only reflected to the world God’s radical and tender love.

I sometimes forget that the all-wise, all-knowing God is also my “Papa“, a God who longs for me to develop an intimate relationship. Help me, God, to express my love for you and increasingly feel your love for me.

“My God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:19

On major highways in the United States there are large signs before exits that lead to nearby cities and towns. On these signs are listed conveniences for the travelers such as gas/petrol stations, hotels, restaurants, etc. But while driving through more rural areas, occasionally one of these signs will have only two words: NO SERVICES. This is to inform travelers that at this exit there are no nearby businesses to satisfy a traveler’s needs. Drivers are free to leave the highway at these points, but they will find only fields, the occasional house or farm and less-maintained roads. There will be no resources to meet basic human needs.

As we travel down the roads of our lives, we are faced with choices similar to those facing drivers on U.S highways. God has promised to provide resources for all our needs but He allows us to make the choices. We are free to investigate all the possibilities, but frequently we turn off God’s best paths only to find that there are, “no services at these points.  In the Bible God gives us all the information we need to make good choices; He asks only that we seek the answers.

God, thank you for providing all I need for living in such a way that you are pleased. Help me never forget how much you love and supply my needs.

Acts 9:15-16, 26:16-20
Genuine interest in the welfare of others like Timothy. Philippians 2:20

Bless your leaders, asking God to shape them into a Christ-like leader…

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

Victoria Johnson was only eight years old when she was repeatedly abused by her own father.

She represents just one of the 39 million here in the U.S. who’ve survived sexual abuse.

In high school Victoria joined the chorus, where God placed a friend in her life.  The girl’s father pastored a local church.  One Sunday he invited the school choir to sing.  And this was the moment Victoria’s life began to change!  God’s word was a soothing touch to her troubled heart.  That day she prayed and invited Christ into her life.  This was her first step to becoming more than a survivor!  Victoria was transformed!  Old things passed away—all things becoming new!

God’s Word says, “For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear; I will help you.

“Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.  Psalm 90:12 (Living Bible)

Do you read the obituaries in your local paper? Lately I find my attention drawn to several sobering issues as I scan this page. First, my heart aches when I read about an infant: “Born yesterday, died today. How devastated must be these parents, grandparents and friends. Expectations of joy have suddenly been replaced with grief. Precious newly purchased baby clothes must be folded with tears and packed away.

Next, I read about equally loved elders who have lived eighty or ninety years and are now gone. These families must soon sort through papers, clothing and long-stored memorabilia—often with tears but perhaps also with gentle smiles as days in the distant past are recalled.

Perhaps most jarring are the paragraphs that detail the sudden death of a person in the prime of life. Too often in our scarred world these deaths occur because of senseless violence or tragic accidents. It is during this reading that the psalmist’s words vividly leap to mind: Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should. In The Message, Eugene Peterson paraphrases thusly: Teach us to live wisely and well.

If I knew that my obituary would be written tomorrow, would I change the activities of today? Would I alter my attitude toward today’s activities? Would I allow petty disagreements to linger? Would I harbor ill-will based on incomplete truth? Facts as well as experience teach us that life is short but we too often live as though that obituary will never be written.

Lord, help me live each day with inner joy and a “clean slate regarding my relationship both with you and with others.

What do you need to do to make today a fresh start? Perhaps you will want to write a note of apology or gratitude. Make it a practice to enter each new day with a cleansed heart.

“God…gave us the ministry of reconciliation…He has committed to us the message of reconciliation…We are Christ’s ambassadors… 2 Corinthians 5:20

The long flight is over and you wearily stand in the snake-like Visa Control line. Your stomach muscles tighten as you observe cultural differences even before you cross the actual border: drab clothing, unsmiling faces, unfamiliar smells. The uniformed and armed government officials you spot on the perimeter of the crowd only increase your uneasiness. You now wonder if all the information you wrote on your visa application should have been included. These people now know your home address, workplace phone number, etc.

You are one of a group of educators coming to a country that has long been unfriendly to Western ideas, yet you have been invited to participate in a seminar that will introduce new instructional techniques to local teachers. The host country is aware that you are Christian and that what you teach will have at its base morals and ethics found in the Christian faith.

While you attempt to make your face an unreadable mask, your heartbeat increases as you step up to the glassed-in booth where a young, but stern, official reaches for your passport. Feeling as though a smile and friendly word might help the process, you say the one word of greeting you know in the national language, but the official merely glances at you and then peers in amazement at the passport: “Occupation: Ambassador.

“Ambassador? he queries with scorn. He can already see that you are not carrying the necessary diplomatic papers but are entering his country with only the normal tourist documents. What now?

This is not a description of an actual occurrence. We know that only authorized people can claim to be “ambassadors in the governmental sense. And yet as citizens of the Kingdom of God, we are called to such an important post. The Apostle Paul writes that God Himself has appointed us to this position. Our job description includes faithfully carrying out the assignment: both the message and ministry of reconciliation.

I don’t advise writing the term “ambassador on your visa papers, but it is important to make sure it is written within our hearts.

Lord, I don’t have the earthly qualifications for the post of ambassador, but thank you for appointing me to that position in your Kingdom. Help me faithfully learn about the culture where I live so I can best represent you and your values.
