“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.     Matthew 5:14-16

Four-year-old Tommy was handed his first, very own flashlight. He and his mother were still in the brightly lit store so when Tommy’s thumb flipped the switch, the beam of light was hard to see. “Mommy, can we please go find some darkness?”

Jesus, as light of the world, has poured into us portion of His very own light. Indeed, He says, “let your light shine before others.” But can it be that our light—His light—is seldom seen because we remain in places where there already is an abundance of light? We prefer the well-lit, comfortable corner of our Christian communities instead of the shrouded halls of a rescue mission, corporate office, classroom or Haitian countryside.

Flashlights—and Christians—shine best in darkness.
