Commitment and obedience are
often thought to be synonymous.
And yet our actions have them
appear to be more antonymous.
Others would have us think that
they were more cryptonymous.
And yes there are those who would
have them be far more anonymous.
They keep our actions and us all
from becoming pseudonymous.
Committed obedience’ is required
to have them become retronymous,
And when applied to all we do or say,
they then become more eponymous.
And with a little suffixation used
‘nymous’ applied becomes acronymous.

Now You Must Obviously Unequivocally Smile!

As I was meditating on the word this morning I sensed a real conviction for commitment to obedience. Commitment obedience gives a desire for a deeper application of our service to the Lord. Rather than just ‘lip service,’ I desire to do ‘active service’ for the Lord.

My prayer for us this week

Heavenly Father we commit ourselves to carefully following you and the commands you give us knowing that, as we do, you set us high above all the nations on earth and you will bless us as we obey you our LORD and our God. In Jesus name, amen.” Deuteronomy 28:1-2

Labels… He’s an alcoholic!  (Translation:  Why can’t he control himself!)

She’s divorced!  (Translation:  She has a lot of baggage!)

Labels relieve us of responsibility.  Pigeonholing permits us to wash our hands and leave.

Jesus took an entirely different approach.  He was all about including people!  John 1:14 says in plain language, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.”

Racism couldn’t keep Jesus from the Samaritan woman.  Demons couldn’t keep him from the demoniac.  The Bible confirms that when the time came, Jesus set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave.

You and I are going to come across some discarded people.  Tossed out.  Sometimes by a church.  And we get to choose.

Neglect or rescue?  Label them or love them?

We know Jesus’ choice!  Let’s follow his example!

When I was little I wanted to be a ninja. I saw Enter the Dragon and I was convinced that when I would grow up, I would make a living by punching and kicking people into submission. My brother, Silviu, had seen the same movie and, as a ten year-old, walked a mile down the road to the nearest Tae Kwon Do studio, and signed up. I, on the other hand, wanted no part of walking two miles a day, five times a week. My plan was to obtain my ninja skills through a type of visual osmosis.  It is many years later, and I’m not the one who can break bricks with my forehead.

Delivery pizza places, microwaves, and cell phones have catapulted us into an Instant Society. We want it- whatever it may be- and we want it now. We don’t have the patience to put in the time and the work. We want the results without the process. The process is tedious. It’s mundane. It’s painful. It’s frustrating. It makes us anxious. It’s the motivation for Facebook statuses like, “Thank God I get off at 4, I’m about to hurt somebody.” Can a job where you have the time to post Facebook statuses be so bad that it would cause you to want to hurt someone?

I’ve heard many people complain about their walk with God and how they’re just “not feeling” Him. “It’s like He’s not even there anymore,” I’ve heard someone say. What I’ve noticed, nine times out of ten, is that the same people complaining about their stale spiritual state are the same people who haven’t read their Bible in weeks. Some of them haven’t been to church in weeks. A lot of them don’t have a small group they attend regularly. A lot of these people spend more time with nonbelievers than Christians. And when it comes to excuses, they say that they just can’t force themselves to read the Bible if they don’t feel like it. The reason they haven’t been to church is because they had to work – as if Sunday is the only option-or they don’t like their church. And as far as small groups are concerned, they just don’t see that as a priority. Nobody has to walk far to find an excuse.

Apostle Paul refers to the Christian journey as a race. For anyone who has ever run enough to be tired, you know that the moment you become tired, your initial reaction is to stop running. But I’ve never seen anyone win a race and not be tired. I’ve never seen anyone make a last-second buzzard beater from the sidelines. Never once in the history of mankind has a woman taken less than three hours to prepare for an important event that includes four types of forks. But I always meet Christians who want to walk closer with God and reap more blessings without running. They want to win by walking.

I’m not advertising legalism. I’m not saying you should read your Bible everyday for an hour and say three prayers by lunchtime and listen to at least two sermons a week. I’m saying that God wants to have a closer relationship with you. A relationship is a two-way road. Where else would you find out about your Savior than in the book that’s about and by Him? How could you have a relationship with someone without talking to Him? Scripture tells us that we grow in Christ from glory to glory, day to day, little by little. It’s not an overnight process. Paul told the Galatians not to grow tired in doing good because they will reap in due time. The author of Hebrews tells us that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Jacob wrestled God all night and would not let Him go until he got his blessing. Elisha followed Elijah in spite of much discouragement; he received a double portion of the power of Elijah (his last miracle was done after his flesh died). The theme here is persistence. We are responsible for putting ourselves in position for God to transform us. Rarely does God transform someone who watches three hours of SportsCenter a day, or every Housewives marathon. And I’ve yet to hear a testimony that includes God’s revelation during a four-hour Facebook binge.

I’m not talking as someone who’s way ahead. I’m talking as someone who is fighting the good fight as well. I’m talking as someone who just received a degree with a letter from the program director that says that in order for me to become a successful writer I must be persistent and use my rejections as motivation and not as a source of depression. I haven’t even told them of my rejections, yet they seem to be fully aware. So how much more, when our life in eternity is at stake, should we be diligent? How much more difficult is the fight going to be if we’re fighting for all the marbles? If we truly believe we are at war, why are we surprised when we encounter obstacles on our way to a fruitful relationship with Christ? My pastor once said that if we never run into the devil, it may be because we’re both going in the same direction.

My brother can break bricks with his head because he was willing to walk two miles a day, rain or shine, hot or cold. Jesus said that we can do greater things than He. But He never said it was going to be easy.

 What does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God . . . .” Romans 4:3 (NIV)

We’re constantly in complex negotiations with God:

— “God, what if you’re not on the other side of this leap?”

— “Are you sure you’re strong enough to catch me?”

— “I think I can handle this one a little better than you, God.”

— “If you show me what, I’ll decide if . . .”

The apostle Paul, who received his sight when he became blind, suggests this negotiation disorder is common among believers. But he also says the cure for our unbelief is to believe God, summing it up with one simple phrase: “Abraham believed God . . .” (Romans 4:3 NIV).

— Abraham believed God to be a loving Father.

— Abraham believed God wanted fellowship with him.

— Abraham believed God would speak with him.

— Abraham believed God would listen to him.

— Abraham believed God wanted to use him in a great mission.

— Abraham believed God knew more than he did when the childless patriarch was called to birth a great nation.

— Abraham believed God was telling him to go, even if it was to a land he did not know.

— Abraham believed God would guide and provide step-by-step.

— Abraham “obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8 NIV).

Abraham leaned hard into his belief because he maintained an intimate friendship with the Father above. By staying close to God, Abraham could see the Almighty could be trusted to do the things he said he would do and to fulfill the commitments he promised to complete.

Abraham believed God. Paul believed God.

Tell God, I believe; help me overcome my unbelief.

A friend was in northern wilderness of British Columbia hunting elk. He and his hunting buddy were positioned on a hill overlooking hundreds of acres of range. Suddenly in the distance they spotted four adult grizzly bears charging down a ridge toward them. Fear gripped their hearts. There was no point in running; there was no place to hide or to find safety. The only hope was to stand their ground and do all they could hoping the bears would never reach them. They knew, even with high powered rifles the odds of dispatching four adult Grizzlies was slim. In the seconds it took to form a plan the bears disappeared into thicket just below them. They only had about a 20 meter window from the thicket to their position. The plan was to make as much noise, yelling and screaming to hopefully spook the bears. In the minutes that followed they could smell the stench of the bears. After exhausting their vocal cords and every ounce of adrenaline they stopped and waited! The bears never came. They must have entered the thicket and proceeded down the creek bed to the valley below. My friend understood in a new way the dangers of the wilderness!!!

When I heard this story it occurred to me, “What are the Grizzlies in my life?” What are the deadly beasts I hope never reach me? What are the things that would destroy my life? The list included some of the big destroyers: adultery, addictions to alcohol or pornography, love of money and possessions. There are some more subtle ones like pride, bitterness, laziness and jealousy. What are yours? The real question is what am I doing to make sure they never reach me?

There are many things to do, here is a few. First, identify the Grizzlies. They will be different or each person. Second, don’t put yourself in harms way. People that play with fire get burned. Are your activities pushing you toward danger? Third, draw on God’s wisdom by spending time in reading the Bible. Forth, realize there is a real spiritual battle. Consider the following:

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him firm in your faith, the God of all grace, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.1 Peter 5: 6-10

Christian daily devotional onlineRecently I was in Allendale County, South Carolina.  Statistically, it is the poorest county in the state. Unemployment is nearly fifty percent. Almost ninety percent of the county is dependent on government assistance for survival. For the most part only a prison, a lumber mill and seasonal hunting provide jobs. Its population is among the poorest of the poor.

It is easy to write these people off as being insignificant, but they are not. God created every one of them for a reason, a purpose and a mission. There are no insignificant people in God’s eyes… and no favored ones either.

Job realized that, in the grand scheme of things, he was a “little” person. He was nothing. And yet, I have to imagine that, right on the heels of that realization came this one: But God Himself showed up to talk to ME! Job, this little “nothing,” called on the God who made the universe . . . and that great God heard him and came running.

God loves the “little” people. In fact, in His kingdom, there are no “little” people. Every single person is important in God’s eyes. Heaven is not built on a hierarchy. That’s why Jesus told the people in His day that even the sparrows—which they counted as meaningless and cheap—were important to God. And if the sparrows didn’t fail to escape His notice, how much more does He care about those who are made in His own image!

In the grand scheme of the universe, our planet is a speck. And that makes each one of us a speck on a speck. Yet our great God also became a speck on a speck so we would know that, to Him, we are not insignificant. We are not vile. We are infinitely valuable.

Yes we are and I stood on a street corner in that little poor town watching the homeless and the unemployed, the human in me wanted to be judgmental and I had some feeling of superiority.

But then the steeple bills of a nearby church began their everyday at five routine of playing a few minutes of hymns. On this day as I stood there, the bells tolled out “This is my Father’s world.”

This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done: Jesus Who died shall be satisfied, And earth and Heav’n be one. Yes, this is His world and there are no little people in it.

Christian daily devotionalVery early the next morning, long before daylight, Jesus got up and left the house. He went out of town to a lonely place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35 TEV

Can you imagine Jesus being too busy to pray in the morning, gulping down a cup of coffee and thinking, “I’ve got so much to do today. When is there time to talk to the Father?” If we are learning to be like Christ, then we have to learn that our intimacy with the Father always takes priority.

God says it is foolish to succumb to the tyranny of the urgent in the morning: “It is useless to work so hard for a living, getting up early and going to bed late. For the LORD provides for those he loves, while they are asleep”. (Psalm 127:2 TEV)

Spending time with God in the morning should be a normal part of life. Dietrich Bonhoeffer notes: “With remarkable frequency the Scriptures remind us that the men of God rose early to seek God and carry out His commands, as did Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and Joshua (cf. Genesis 19:27, 22:3; Exodus 8:16, 9:13, 24:4; Joshua 3:1, 6:12)”.

And the Bible tells us that Jesus made it a daily habit: “Very early the next morning, long before daylight, Jesus got up and left the house. He went out of town to a lonely place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35 TEV).

Jesus is . . .
Jesus desired intimacy with God. His attitude is reflected in Psalm 63: “O God, you are my God, and I long for you. My whole being desires you; like a dry, worn-out, and waterless land, my soul is thirsty for you(Psalm 63:1 TEV).

To be like Jesus . . .
Christ’s message in all its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct one another with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving in your hearts. Everything you do or say, then, should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks through him to God the Father”
(Colossians 3:16-17 TEV).

No doubt you already see the need to spend time with God in the morning.

Thoughts on today’s verse

Our actions follow our thoughts like a heat-seeking missile follows the exhaust of a jet fighter’s engine. So in a day when so much around us trains us to find the negative in life, we must aggressively think and pursue the character, the qualities, and the things of God’s goodness.

Prayer:

Holy and Magnificent God, thank you for being better than anything my world can offer me. Thank you for calling me to a higher standard than the world accepts. Thank you for giving me the promise of a better future than any human can imagine. Thank you for giving me a high calling. In Jesus’ holy name I pray. Amen.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does.”- James 1:22-25 NIV

It was a new term to me, but it caught my attention when I heard a CPA talking about “Idle Assets.” He explained that idle assets are assets that are lying unused or that are not earning any income. Any asset that is unused or not appreciating in value can be considered an idle asset.

For example when you place cash in your vault, it can be considered an idle asset. It is not being used for anything and nor is it increasing in value. If we had invested it somewhere or at least deposited it in a bank, it would be earning interest and hence we could not term it idle. Now since it is just lying there in the vault it can be considered idle.

Whoa! What idle assets do I have? What things and gadgets have I acquired that are not bearing economic fruit or not being used in a productive way? But it is more than an economic term, as there is a spiritual parallel here.

As a saved person, I have been given the sacred gift, given only by God to those who connect with Him through His Son Jesus Christ. Do I lock the Word and my spiritual gifts in a vault? Do they then become “idle spiritual assets?”

James says that if we listen to the Word and not do what it says, we are like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and, after looking at himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. We are implored to not forget what we have heard, but to do it.

To quote Charles Spurgeon: “Preachers must preach as for eternity and look for fruit—and hearers must carry out what they hear, or otherwise the sacred ordinance of preaching will cease to be the channel of blessing and will rather be an insult to God and a mockery to the souls of men!”

It is bad stewardship and bad economics when monetary and economic assets become idle, but it is far worse for our spiritual assets to become idle. Use what God has uniquely given to you in body, mind and soul and never ever have to explain to God why you have let them become idle.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peaceRomans 8:6 (KJV)

I believe the truth of this verse may speak to a common cause of depression among Christians who allow their minds to dwell on ungodly thoughts and/or over-introspection.

Paul writes: “I advise you to obey only the Holy Spirit’s instructions. He will tell you where to go and what to do, and then you won’t always be doing the wrong things your evil nature wants you to. For we naturally love to do evil things that are just the opposite from the things that the Holy Spirit tells us to do, and the good things we want to do when the Spirit has His way with us are just the opposite of our natural desires” (Galatians 5:16,17).

Our minds are susceptible to the influence of our old sin- nature and, as such, can pose real dangers to us. As soon as we get out of step with the Holy Spirit and get our focus off the Lord, our minds begin to give us trouble.

The Christian life is really simple,” I heard a pastor say recently. “It’s simply doing what we’re told to do.” And he is right. We will be spiritually minded, not carnally minded, if we obey the simple commands of God’s Word.

Prayer:

Loving Father, thank you for giving me your truth in Scripture. To know that you love me enough to communicate in language I can read is truly awe inspiring to me. Make my heart hunger for your truth revealed in your Word. I want to grow to be a righteous and gracious child in your family. With love through my older brother I pray. Amen

Daily devotionalHave you ever known someone who has had a near death experience and survived? Perhaps it was a serious disease or perhaps a narrow escape from death. Most people who have such an experience comment that they guess the Lord wasn’t finished with them yet and had something else in store for them to do.

I recalled such an experience at an early age, when recently I read about the tragic loss of life from a flash flood on the Caddo River in Caddo Gap, Arkansas. Dozens of campers were victims of a nighttime flash flood when the river rose at the rate of eight feet per hour. Many saved their lives by scaling up the steep embankments and unfortunately many did not survive.

It made me recall a time when I was a teenager and with five others drove to Colorado to camp there for a week and then camp the following week in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Shortly after arriving in Colorado one of our group became seriously ill and required medical treatment, causing us to spend the entire two weeks in Colorado. It was much to my disappointment, as I wanted so much to see Yellowstone, where we had campground reservations for months in advance.

It wasn’t until we were on the way back home when we found out about the big earthquake, so strong that it reversed the flow of a river and obliterated the campground where we had reservations. Dozens of campers perished and certainly we would have been among them but for the illness that kept us in Colorado.

I was not a practicing Christian at the time, but I remember wondering what kind of adult life I had ahead of me and what I would have missed if I had been camping at Yellowstone. It was a sobering thought that had a deep and early impression on my life.

Sometimes God saves our life in ways we never know about. Sometimes we do. I have a friend who was flying from Chicago to Detroit and got to the gate just as the plane pulled back. He was angry that he was going to miss a meeting he felt he could not miss. But when he found out that the plane went down over Lake Michigan killing all aboard, suddenly his attitude changes from anger to thanks. He thought that the meeting wasn’t so important after all.

The truth is that every day we live and survive is through God’s mercy and grace. He saves our life daily so we can serve and praise Him tomorrow. Truly, our days are numbered and when we will begin eternity, we know not. But one thing we do know is that each day is a gift, to be lived for His glory and mission each day. Live today as if it were your last and then be thankful when you wake up tomorrow.

Thoughts on today’s verse

Nothing stains quite like sin. It not only leaves a stain in our heart but a residue in our minds. But God’s grace is shown in that he doesn’t just forgive our sins, he doesn’t just forget our sins, he banishes them. They are gone. The stain is removed, the guilt is taken away. We are clean by his grace.

Prayer:

O the joy your grace gives me! I can never thank you or praise you enough for rerouting my life so that it will end, and begin again, in you. Through Jesus I pray. Amen.
