Called Out of the Dark

Share

“You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.”  1 Thessalonians 5:5

The dark can be a scary place. I have never felt comfortable in the darkness. My imagination runs to places I’d never think of if I was in a lit room.

When I was a young boy, my older cousins tied me to a tree and left me there alone in the backyard at night. After a while, I was able to free myself. I’ve never forgotten the feeling of running out of the dark and into the light of my house.

Jesus said there would be some cast out into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:40-43). These will never see the light again. But there is great hope for us all. He also said,

I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12).

God is light, and in him, there is no darkness at all. He calls us out of the darkness into his marvelous light. He then delivers us from its power over us and translates us into his kingdom (Colossians 1:13). What great love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called the children of God!

Fellow pilgrim, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you are no longer a slave of sin and darkness. You don’t live there anymore. You no longer belong to the night. As the day dawns, let us wake up because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

Lord, thank you for opening my eyes that I would turn from the darkness to light and to you, receiving the forgiveness of my sins and an inheritance among all those who put their faith in you. Amen.
