A Life Under His Blessing

“… the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” Haggai 1:5b-6 (NIV)

In the book of Haggai, God’s people were not behaving as such. They spoke His name, but they placed their own needs first. The results? Ironically, their provisions never provided enough.

It took God’s intervention, speaking through Haggai, to change the course of His people. He moved them to think carefully about their ways. He helped them see that their lives weren’t truly working without Him as their true King. In doing so, God moved His people’s hearts to place Him first in their lives.

He challenges us today to consider our ways in light of God’s. This can be disheartening at first as we face the truth. Yet, the truth sets us free (John 8:32), and the turn to God is that needed steering to avoid the cliff toward which our self-centeredness always leads. When we do, He says, “From this day on I will bless you.’”(2:19b, NIV).

He loves you and me, my friend, even when we fail. He loves us enough to help us change our ways and move back to Him. When we do, we begin to live a life under his blessing.
