How long, O LORD, will I call for help, And You will not hear? I cry out to You, “Violence!” Yet You do not save.” Habakkuk 1:2

Do you feel stuck in discouragement? If so, you are not alone.

At some point everyone experiences dashed hopes. Disappointment–an emotional response to a failed expectation–is the normal initial reaction. But allowed to linger, it can turn into discouragement, which hovers like a dense cloud. When that’s the case, there is no sense of joy or contentment, no matter what you do.

The circumstances that trigger these emotions may be unavoidable, but the way we respond is a choice. We can either let sadness overwhelm our souls or face the situation with courage and bring it before the One who can help us.

Living in discouragement will divide the mind, making it hard to focus on anything besides our pain. Then as anger becomes habitual, we’ll look for someone to blame–whether God, people around us, or our self.

Frustration that isn’t handled well may develop into depression, which in turn can estrange us from others–people do not enjoy the company of someone who’s bitter and defeated. This isolation leads to a low self-esteem. Finally, in a fog of discouragement, we can make poor decisions based on crushed emotions instead of truth. Obviously, choosing this self-destructive path is not God’s best for our lives.

Though we’ll all face disappointment from time to time, believers are not to wallow in it. Instead, God wants us to trust Him with everything–even our unmet expectations and deepest sadness.

Remember, there is divine purpose for everything He allows to touch His children’s lives (Romans 8:28).

Proverb 6:9 We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps

Proverbs 16:9 (NLT)

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

Maybe the challenges you are facing right now is because God is trying to re-route you. Oftentimes, we run ahead of God with our own plans. He then has to correct our course to get us back on the track that He originally purposed for us. He already knows what it will take for us to accomplish what He placed upon our hearts.

It is so important for us to pay attention to the leading of the Holy Spirit. He knows what is ahead of us . He sees what we can’t see. He knows the original blueprint for our lives as He gently reminds us in Jeremiah 29:11; “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

The question is, Do you trust Him? Do you trust the plan that He has for you? If you find yourself at a crossroads right, let me encourage you to stop, listen, and pay attention to what God is speaking to you right now. Listen for His instructions and follow in obedience.

Father, so many are at a place of indecision right now. They are lost and without hope. They are confused about what their next step should be. Your Word reminds us that we are to acknowledge You in all of our ways so that You may direct our paths. I ask that as they come to You for guidance, You will guide them with your eyes upon them. I pray that their ears will be open and attentive to Your voice. I pray that they will not run ahead of You but listen intently for Your wisdom and guidance in all that they do. I thank You for redirection and refocus. In Jesus’ name Amen.
