Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, a television program entitled “Mission Impossible” was popular in North America. One particular line of dialogue was soon adapted to many situations: “Your mission, should you choose to accept it…”
Just before Jesus returned to heaven, he imparted a mission statement to his followers: “Go!” But He definitely did not include the qualifying words, “should you choose to accept it”! Jesus’ words to the men and women who gathered on that hillside in Israel is as pertinent to us today as it was to them. They obeyed and the then known world was changed. In our day we find people around the world who hear and are committed to Jesus’ command. Many risk their very lives to share the good news of the Gospel and even consistently and creatively seek ways to enter corners of the world where that message has not before been heard.
But their efforts—and ours—are definitely not a “mission impossible” because the presence, power and authority of Jesus Himself accompanies His children. All the strength and resources of the combined earthly powers cannot even hint at what He provides. Therefore, we go in confidence so that our world can be changed.
Father, I admit that my confidence wavers when I think of the enormity of the task of making disciples in all nations. Teach me more about trusting you in all things—even in small things—so I can be one of those choosing to accept your mission.
