“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1 (NKJV)

You know what it’s like to ride with someone who knows all the back roads. The “easy” roads. The “secret” way to get places. But you also know the truth. It’s not really “secret.”  It’s just not commonly used.

The Bible talks about a “secret place.” Not a place God is hiding from us, but an uncommon place. Uncommon, because not many of us dwell there on a consistent basis.

Attitudes and anxieties fester, and it’s difficult to dwell in the secret place. We listen to lies in our head, and we step out. It seems we have finally resorted to its safety, and the smallest irritation lures us away.

So what can we do?

We can learn to identify those lures in our lives that cause us to step out of the secret place. We can beware of “trigger thoughts” common to all of us, like these:

“What if. . .”
I’m tired of . . .”
He always . . .”
She never. . .”

Whatever takes our mind off the sufficient control of the good God whose Shadow is the safest place to be is the very thing that will push us out of the secret place.

Each morning, spend time securing that spot in the “secret place.” Then, guard against attitudes and thoughts that cause you to step out of its safety.

How can you and I “dwell in the secret place of the Most High”?

Step in . . . and stay.

Father, Thank You for being our shelter, our hiding place, a safe place from all that seeks to destroy our peace.  Help us as we guard against all that lures us away from that secure place in You.  May we step into that safety daily, and stay there by Your grace. In Jesus Name.  Amen.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.  He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.” Psalm 91:1-2, 4

When I lived in Yakima, Washington, it was quite common to see a covey of California Quail scratching for food among the dried grass.  One day as I came home from work there were quail in my driveway.  I was able to cautiously walk up onto my deck to watch as the hen, her eight chicks and the male quail strutted by.  Suddenly they became frightened and quickly fled toward the dried stalks in my flowerbed.  As I watched them scatter, the chicks all dove under the hen’s wings while she swelled up to about three times her normal size.

What a perfect visual of the first several verses of Psalm 91. Just as the chicks sought shelter under the hen’s wings, so too does God shelter us when we are afraid.  When we run to Him, we can trust that He will spread his wings and grant us refuge from the many storms we face in life.
