Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ … “Coming up to them at that very moment, she [the prophet Anna] gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.Luke 2:34-35, 38

One of my favorite things about the Christmas narrative is how God uses unlikely folks — an unwed virgin, a carpenter, foreign wise men, sheepherders, and senior citizens — to unfold His plan of salvation.

I’ve always loved the story of Simeon (Luke 2:22-36)  in the Bible. Perhaps it’s because, growing up, I was surrounded by loving and godly seniors who took an interest in my life. But I think it’s also because this story highlights the fact that it’s never too late for anyone to be used by God in incredible ways.

Simeon and the prophet Anna had faithfully served God and prayed for decades, but when Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple, it was their greatest ministry opportunity so far. Their acts of faith that day proved to be their most enduring legacy. They testified about the Messiah Israel had longed for since the time of the exile. They actually held the Promised One in their arms!

God is no respecter of age. He doesn’t retire people from His service when their bodies start to wear out. If the heart is willing, God is willing! If a person is available, he or she will soon find an opportunity for significant kingdom impact presented to them by God’s design. And it may be the greatest influence they’ve ever had!

You’re never too old to bear witness to the Prince of Peace.

Thank You God that even today, no matter my weaknesses, You delight in using me for Your glory. I’m available. Use me. Amen.

12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree . . .”, “14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green” . Psalm 92: 12,14

It was Saturday morning and as was our habit, we were at  McDonald’s’ having breakfast and reading the paper.   But then we both stopped reading and listened to the men behind us.

We heard a man with an older voice telling the man he was sitting with how important it was to be sure that his heart was right with God, because there was life after death (they had been talking about a terrible train accident where many people were killed). The younger man didn’t believe there was life after death. (Marvin and I both started praying.) The older man said he knew he would be going to heaven when he died – and encouraged the younger man to make sure his heart was right with God. The younger man didn’t say much.

Then the older man left the restaurant and so did we.  He was sitting in his car – the window open.  We went to tell him how inspired we were to hear him witness to the younger man. He said that God had really changed his life, he couldn’t help but encourage others to open their hearts to Him.

He was ninety two – yes, that is correct – he was 92 and still telling others about God.

The late Dr. Bill Bright was famous for saying, “God has something for us to do until our last breath.

Jesus said in Acts 1:8 (Amp),

But when you receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be my witnesses . . .”

Question. Do you look for opportunities to witness?  Do you feel inadequate to witness?  Have you been rejected when you have tried to witness?  Are you afraid? I encourage you to read the article, How to be a Fruitful Witness.  You will be helped to be a fruitful witness for our Lord—whatever age you are.

Father, people need to know about your love and forgiveness.  Your Holy Spirit gives us the power and courage to witness.  Help us to trust you to give us the words to tell others about your plan for eternity. Amen
