Blessed are those. Jeremiah 17:7

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green and they never stop producing fruit.Jeremiah 17:7 & 8

The incredible promise of these verses is a treasure chest of peace as we enter a new year. Whatever the months ahead hold for us as individuals, as a nation, or even on the world stage of events, this promise is a sure place to set your heart.

Soaking up the peace and confidence of full trust in our Lord keeps us in a place of productivity, fruitfulness and hope no matter what goes on around us.

As you walk through this coming January make this promise your own. Determine to put your roots down deep into the fresh supply of His living water every day. Be intentional about time in God’s presence listening to worship music, reading His word and bringing your thanksgiving into His throne room as you bring your requests to Him.

Enjoy the Lord this year as you never have before and experience the lush green of walking together with Him.

Lord God, Thank you for Your incredible promise. Help me to keep it in full focus as I walk through this whole year. Whether things around me blossom or shrivel I am determined to stay green and fruitful as I intentionally and fully trust You every single step of the way. I pray this with thanksgiving in the strong name of Jesus, amen.

Children rain boots

Children are a blessing and a gift from the LORD.” Psalm 127:3 (CEV)

It struck me that if children are a blessing from the Lord, then God must actually be looking upon us as blessings too! Since we are “His children God is our Heavenly Father” God also views us as a blessing to Himself.

I know some days my children are blessings. Just recently, a simple “thank you” from our kindergartener made me smile. When she saw the impact her words had on me, she quickly asked, “Mommy, did that just lift your spirits up, up, up?”

There are many simple things that make my heart sing: I am blessed when our children, “brother and sisters” treat each other with Love and respect. I am blessed when they are kind to friends and neighbors. I am blessed when they share well. I am blessed when they remember good manners. I am blessed when they are thankful and not just consumed with their own needs. I am blessed when they are obedient. I am blessed when they learn and grow into new skills. In the same way, our Father in Heaven is blessed when we, His children, do these simple things.

Reflect:
Knowing that God loves you unconditionally, take a few moments and ask God to show you how you bless Him. How can I bless the heart of my Father today?

Prayer:
Dear Father, help me be a blessing to You and Your Kingdom. Help me love others and treat everyone with kindness and respect. Help me live a life that makes Your heart sing.

“For whom the LORD loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:12

Amanda woke up feeling hung over and dizzy… again.  She went to clubs every night.  And got drunk to hide her emotional pain.  She didn’t enjoy waking up like that, but thought, “What else am I supposed to do?”

Amanda claimed to have given her life to Jesus, but her actions didn’t reflect it.  In spite of the way she lived, the girls in her Bible study showered her with God’s love.  One night, Amanda told the group she was not going to the clubs anymore and had stopped drinking.   She realized what it meant to live her life for Jesus and not waste it in the clubs.  And later, Amanda even led one of her friends to Christ!

Dear friend, if there is someone in your life who seems far from God, shower them with His love.

Saved. Isaiah 43:1 You are Mine!

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1

The Hudson River churned furiously as Marlinda stared at the white water below her.  Like the rapid water, Marlinda’s heart swirled with confusion and hopelessness.

She didn’t see the woman coming up behind her.  But just as Marlinda started over the edge, the woman grabbed her, pulling her back to safety.  Just that morning God had laid on that person’s heart to pray for a stranger in desperate need of hope!

Later the rescuer’s sister called Marlinda.  She said, “The life God has for you is better than anything the world has to offer.”  As Marlinda fell to her knees, she cried out to God and invited Jesus to take control of her life.  Today Marlinda Ireland introduces her readers to a renewed passion for Christ.

Friend, right now God has a better life—for you!

feature hug friends women

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching”  Hebrews 10:24-25.

It had been eight months since I had attended church.

No problem, I thought, I pray, watch podcasts, and study God’s Word by myself. It’s all good, right? That’s what I thought…until God showed me otherwise.

Arriving in Grenada on our sailboat two weeks ago, we headed to town to stretch our legs. A few minutes into our walk, I spied a God believing church. Tomorrow was Sunday. Perfect.

Arriving early, I participated in the ladies’ morning bible study, heard from the women’s hearts, and shared from mine. Tears of overwhelming joy began to well up. I was with complete strangers, but I was with my family: the family of God. My soul was craving fellowship with other believers and I didn’t even know it. My soul was craving the love and fellowship with others who loved Jesus.

Thank you God for, once again, knowing my needs better than I do.

The second blessing came when unforeseen circumstances required us to be in the same community the following Sunday. I was able to attend the church a second time!

Coincidence? I think not.
God’s love for his child? Definitely!

Why does God want us to fellowship? Why does He command that we meet regularly? Why does He teach us to learn about Him and read his Word continually?

Without God at the forefront of my mind throughout the majority of the day, I allow other things and people to take His place. Unwittingly, I had allowed God to slip to a secondary priority in my life and it was very evident. God graciously revealed my oversight and gently gave my life a route adjustment.

Thank you Jesus that You love me deeply. Thank you for giving Your children perfect gifts from above. Thank you for giving us other like-minded believers who we can learn from and grow with. Thank you that You have created us to be dependent upon You and your provisions for us. Thank you that regardless of my geographical location, You provide a means for me to study and learn about You. I love you Jesus. Amen.

Blessed are those who love the Irritating. Devotional

When tests come through those who irritate me, I have to ask myself, “Am I loving God by loving them?” If I am not loving them, I am not loving God. John’s repeated admonitions in 1 John about personal relationships convicts me every time. For example, “If someone claims, ‘I love God,’ but hates his brother or sister, then he is a liar. Anyone who does not love a brother or sister, whom he has seen, cannot possibly love God, whom he has never seen.” He gave us a clear command, that all who love God must also love other Christians (1 John 4:20-21). Oh my!

Offense is the act of provoking, annoying, irritating, or causing pain or injury. It is also the reaction the offense produces, like indignation, resentment, or anger, which can lead to breach in a relationship. When someone sins against us, our flesh rises up and demands retribution. But the way of grace must watch over our hearts, guard our mouths, and release the offender.

The writer of Proverbs urges us to respond to offenses by giving evidence of the grace of God. Read these statements and ask God to reveal how you responded the last time you were offended.

A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense (Proverbs 19:11). Patience is wisdom, and wisdom lets an offense pass without responding sinfully. Love keeps no record of wrongs suffered.

Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city (Proverbs 16:32). It is better to be patient. A Spirit-controlled response wins battles.

An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city, and disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel (Proverbs 18:19). A hostile relationship is hard to win back. Contention separates people into opposing sides. Jesus died to break down the dividing walls.

He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity (Proverbs 21:23). When our unguarded mouth gives vent to our unhealed heart, we unleash words that hurt deeply.

Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, Do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared (Proverbs 22:24-25). Don’t take personally the anger of angry people, or you will find yourself reacting to them in the same destructive way.

Calmness can lay to rest great errors [offenses] (Ecclesiastes 10:4). A quiet spirit will overcome anger and turn aside the hurtful actions of others. Identify the great forgiveness of Jesus in each situation and relationship.

He was delivered over to death for our sins (offenses)” (Romans 4:25). We overlook offenses because Jesus took our offenses and bore them to His cross. Those who have been forgiven much will forgive much.

Jesus is the standard and He is the means, the power, and the grace for any person or situation. He never leaves us without the power to obey His commands, because He is living in us to obey. “I have told them about Your nature; and I will continue to speak of Your name in order that Your love, which was poured out on Me, will be in them. And I will also be in them” (John 17:26).

Feature Dark Storm Clouds - Dark Days Devotional

Hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? Job 38:22b-23 (KJV)

I rarely read the King James Version but, as I read one of my devotionals, these verses caught my attention. The treasures of the hail hit me – right between the eyes. This is what I saw.

Okay. Here’s a thought. When you were little and frightened by a thunderstorm, did you ever run to your dad or mom and crawl up in his or her lap, wanting to be comforted with hugs? Just the nearness of the one who loved you sufficed, right?

So, what is my hail? What stormy circumstances pummel me with pellets of heartache? What is my treasure in all this? Where do I go in my tears? To the Father! To the One I know who loves me and longs for me to crawl up in His lap.

Sometimes, we see these trials as black cloud-shapes of the enemy, but not every black cloud contains an enemy. What if those times of trouble could be used against the enemy, for that day of battle? Can I use those situations for God’s glory by not complaining, by being thankful and praising God, and by seeking God’s presence and His will?

Do we realize those dark clouds threatening to overtake us announce His arrival and conceal His presence? F. B. Meyer wrote, “A storm is only the outskirts of His robe—the symptom of His advent and the environment of His presence.” As the hem of His garment. Stirring up the atmosphere. But His presence is in the cloud. His peace awaits us in the midst of the cloud. In the eye of the storm.

The Father’s nearness is our treasure hiding in the dark clouds. Where did David say God hid? “He made darkness His hiding place.” Psalm. 18:11 (NASB)

Our troubles have always brought us blessings, and they always will. They are the dark chariots of bright grace.” ~Charles Spurgeon

If God hides in the clouds, don’t the riches, the blessings, of His presence await us there? In the eye of the storm awaits the treasures of His guidance, His peace, His words of comfort, the riches of His glory. And more. Do we seek all He has for us in these times?

Do not be afraid to enter the cloud that is settling down on your life – God is in it. The other side is radiant with His glory.” ~Unknown

Do not allow the clouds and hail of your circumstances to cause the darkness of heartache and discouragement to hover over you. Draw near to God in the dark cloud…and find His treasures awaiting you.

Under the shrouding curtain of His pavilion, you will find God awaiting you.” ~ Unknown

Remember, when a dark, rumbling cloud looms over your life, it is the advent of His presence. Trust Him. Continue your service to Him. Wait it out, rest in His presence, and things will be better on the other side.

You are never without hope, for He will never leave you lacking the assurance of His presence. He will see you through the hail and the storm.

Praise Him Who rides the clouds over your life, Who meets you in the eye of the storm, in the midst of the pellets of hail, and says, “Peace. Peace, be still!”

What is your hail circumstance? Where does it send you? What is your treasure?

Lips speaking truth or lies devotional

Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies
Psalm 34:13

Have you noticed that lying has become acceptable in our culture? Or does it just seem that way to me? Every day, the newscasters have their own spin on stories; adults cheat on their spouses or income tax forms; students cheat in school; padding a person’s resume is normal. And there are grey areas like, “I like your shoes” or “I am sorry, but he is not available.” Not true.

Who are we taking our direction from? The Lord is the Truth. (John 14:5) Satan is the father of lies. (John 8:44)

Lying is wrong and does not please God. We cannot lie and be filled with His Spirit at the same time. Jesus said,

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth” (3 John 1:4).

Being truthful pleases the Lord and He hates lies.

“The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful” (Proverbs 12:22).

How can we change our complacency about lying?

1.    Ask God to search our hearts and confess the sins He points out. (1 John 1:9)
2.    Be controlled and directed by the Holy Spirit
3.    Read the Bible every day – fill your mind with Truth.
4.    Obey the Lord. Ask Him to enable you to be Truthful.
5.    Pray for others who have made a habit of lying

Father, lying has become a way of life for so many people, including many Christians. Cleanse our hearts, Oh Lord! Let nothing but the truth cross our lips. Let there be revival in our hearts and in Your church, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Hebrews 12:1a-2b Devotional on a Sandpiper and Running the Race

While sitting by the gulf in Northwest Florida, I watched as three sandpipers scurried by. There was something special about one of them. He had one leg and one little stump.

One leg or two, he could still soar. But to walk through the everyday ins and outs of life, to live with an unchangeable circumstance day after day, to survive one-legged in a two-legged world, took courage and determination.  For him, living life was an effort foreign to the others.

None of these things stopped this little sandpiper. He hopped alongside the others, determined to survive in this two-legged world. His was a one-legged life, but he made it work.

When he hopped by, I almost missed him. I almost missed his silent courage and seemingly effortless determination. I almost missed this tiny reminder that obstacles can be overcome and hurdles produce courage.

Sometimes, life seems like a one-legged journey in a two-legged world: off-balance, too much effort, a hindered hop from one hurdle to another.

But life doesn’t have to stop just because it’s hard.

This one-legged sandpiper kept going.

Is there anything stopping us?

Hebrews 12:1b-2a–“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” (NKJV)

Lord, Thank You for the hurdles of life; the hard things day by day that keep us turned Your direction.  Help us not to cave into our circumstances, but to see them as opportunities to run the race with an endurance that only comes from keeping our eyes fixed on You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Crazy eyes - Wild and Crazy Faith devotional

Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night. Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. ‘If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!’ they complained. ‘Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?’”
Numbers 14:1-3 (NLT)

What would cause someone to go against the tide of social influence? Peer pressure is a powerful force and few can stand against it. However, there were two men in the Bible who did just that.

Caleb and Joshua were chosen, along with 10 other men, to explore the Promised Land and give a report to Moses and the people. But when they returned, it was only Caleb and Joshua who believed they could conquer the people inhabiting the land. And the people of Israel staged an all-night protest in response to their report!

What made Caleb and Joshua stand strong in the midst of this tidal wave of objection?

They knew their God! Their courage wasn’t based on how battle trained the Israelites were or how many spears they did or didn’t have. It was anchored in a God who had proven Himself faithful, time and time again.

They viewed the Promised Land through a different lens.

What kind of faith do you have? Do you trust God when things seem impossible, when you can’t see what He is doing? Are you viewing your life through an earthly lens or a heavenly one?

Lord, I confess I have put You in a box. I’ve made You a God who’s comfortable for me. I don’t want You to stretch me, challenge me, or ask me to do anything where I have to really trust You, because honestly, it’s just too scary. But this has never been Your desire for me. You are so much greater! I’m sorry for making You small. I’m sorry for not really knowing who You say You are. Give me eyes to see You, ears to hear Your whispers, and a heart that responds to Your grace. Amen.

story of a manicure

I tell you, keep asking, and it will be given you,” Luke 11:9

I had been praying for her for six months. She was great at her job–fast, friendly, cheerful and positive. We were miles apart in our standards, but we enjoyed each others company.

I had been praying that we would connect on a spiritual level and last week it happened. She was doing my nails and out of the blue, she said, “I have been drinking too much and it isn’t good for me.” She was giving it up. I said, “Great! How long have you gone without drinking?” “A week.” she said.

I replied, “Marvin and I never touch it because we have so many alcoholics in our family, we decided we didn’t want to take the chance.  Several families have broken up because of booze.”

She told me her brothers were also addicted to drugs.

She seemed changed, more subdued somehow.

We talked about other things for a while and then my husband walked in to give me a message. After he left, she said, ”He is nice-looking.” “He is nice on the inside too!” I said. “So are you,” she said.

Well if I am nice, I can’t take the credit, I know what I am like on the inside and it isn’t pretty. But Jesus is living in my life and He is changing me into a nicer person.”  When I started talking about Jesus, she became animated and told me she prayed to Jesus. She gave me a big kiss when I left and asked the Lord to bless me.

God answers prayers and helps us connect with people who are seemingly so different from us.  I can hardly wait to see her again.

I have seen her many times since then – Jesus is changing her too!

Father, thank you for answering prayer. Thank you for working in my friend’s life. Help her to know that you love her with an everlasting love. Amen

clock time - Devotional on time

86,400 ticks of the clock

All of us are conscious of time, in one way or another. We feel that we don’t ever have enough time, but we all have 86,400 ticks of the clock every day. Time is a non-renewable asset.

The writer of Ecclesiastes said, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” The psalmist prayed in Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Paul admonishes us in Ephesians 5:15-16, “So be careful how you live; be mindful of your steps. Don’t run around like idiots as the rest of the world does. Instead, walk as the wise! Make the most of every living and breathing moment because these are evil times.” (The Voice translation)

God values time. Receive my heart for you in this blessing. May all the ticks of the clock register in your life that is filled with obedience, enjoyment of God, and awareness of His watchfulness and love. May every present moment be blessed in Him to experience His thoughts and emotions and to receive goodness from His hand. May your days be filled with teaching, intimacy, and trust. Be blessed with eyes on God and not on self, with humility, confession, and certainty of His ever-present forgiveness and cleansing.

Be constantly aware of His feeding hand, aware of tasting the Bread of Life in Jesus. Be blessed to be aware of His fire that burns within you by the Holy Spirit. Let Him translate truth and grace into you with life and power.

May you be aware constantly of God moments in your daily routine and of special God-appointments along the way. May eternal God come into your present time with love, joy, peace, and hope. May you always live in eager anticipation, standing on tiptoe of expectation of seeing God in every moment of your day. God bless your spirit, soul, and body to be aligned with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

BIble reading. Studying scripture.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.”
Philippians 2:8-9

The reason why Jesus came into the world was to die on the cross for the sins of humanity. But it was far from easy: on His last night on earth, Jesus cried out to God three times, asking Him for another way. But God didn’t provide one. So, Jesus humbled Himself to God’s will. And His obedience led Him die one of the worst deaths imaginable.

What is God calling you to do that you are finding hard to obey? Are you sensing, deep within you, that God is speaking to you about something you’re meant to do? Maybe He’s calling you to take a risk, and you’re having a hard time letting go of your comfort zone. If so, I want to encourage you to humble yourself, obey, and step out in faith just like Jesus did. The reward for you will be great, as it was for Jesus. An obedient lifestyle may not be easy, but it is possible.

We may not understand how the entire process is going to work out, but we need to trust God, because He is worthy of our trust! He is good and His plans for us are good. It just makes sense for us to be obedient to Him and to His call.

Father, give us the grace to be obedient to what You are calling us to. May we have the courage to step out in faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.

hand offering world devotional

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”  He asked this only to test him, for He already had in mind what He was going to do.” John 6:5&6

We don’t know his name, but we do know the little boy was among the crowd that gathered to hear Jesus teach. He bought a small lunch of five buns and two sardine-like fish. He must have overheard the conversation when Jesus, knowing exactly what was going to happen yet, asked His disciples the question anyway. “Where will we buy food for these people?” Philip quickly answered that it would take more than half a year’s wages to buy everyone a bite!

I can just imagine the scene. Tugging on disciple Andrew’s sleeve, the young boy says, “I have some food”, and holds out his small lunch. Andrew takes the lunch to Jesus, acknowledging that it certainly won’t go far. Yet Jesus receives the small offering and tells His disciples to have the crowd sit on the hillside. Then He blesses the little lunch, breaks it up and gives it to His disciples to hand out.

Can you imagine the little boys delight as his lunch is passed out yet it never runs out! That day five thousand people were fed and there were twelve baskets of leftovers!

I love this story because of the innocent, naïve, generous offering the little boy made to Jesus. It would have made more sense for him to find a shady spot and share his lunch with a friend. Yet when he overheard the need for food and knew he had some, he offered it, small as it was …. and an incredible miracle took place!

What is in Your hand today? A talent that has been dormant too long? Some resources that you could share? Some time to give? All around us there are needs of many kinds. We look at what we have to offer and it simply isn’t enough. It seems naïve to even offer our small token toward filling the need. Yet when we place what we have in the hands of Jesus, He blesses it and uses it to meet those needs. He truly performs miracles when we generously offer Him what is in our hands to give.

Lord God, Please help me not to shrink back and keep what I have to myself. Help me to have the courage to place my time, talents or resources in Your hands and watch what miracle You will do with my small offering. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Thought: Is there a need that tugs at your heart yet you feel what you have to offer is too small to mention? Ask the Lord to help you bring it forward, even when it seems to make little sense. He may just be waiting to do a miracle through you!

God has a Plan Devotional

My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will [not what I desire], but as You will and desire.” Matthew 26:39b (AMPC)

It is not always easy to understand the will of our Father, but it is imperative that we choose to follow His lead. I have come to understand that He knows best. We don’t have to know all the details. It is up to us to TRUST His heart concerning us.

So, today, I encourage you not to lose hope in the midst of the pain you may be feeling right now. God has a plan. His plan is not always understood but it will be revealed. You may not know what tomorrow holds, but follow His voice as He leads you step by step to the next place He has for you. He is a God of purpose. He uses the good, the bad and the ugly to work together for our good. Trust Him.

Father, it is so hard for us to understand Your will at times. We know what we desire to happen, but that is not always what You desire. Teach us Father to submit our will to Yours. Teach us to trust Your heart for us. Teach us not only to know Your ways but to know  Your character. Teach us to find our peace and assurance in Your love for us. May we come to understand that Your plans are to give us an expected end and a hope. Let Your will be done in our lives Lord. In Jesus name Amen.
