Nobody Came
by Marilyn Ehle
“On the evening of that first day of the week…Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!  John 20:19
We had invited a young couple new to our condominium complex to come for a relaxed Saturday brunch. Friday afternoon I made cinnamon rolls, set the table and began preparations for a delicious egg dish to be served the next morning. Although to this point we had only chatted over our back patios, we now eagerly looked forward to getting acquainted with these new neighbors.
Ten o’clock—the agreed upon time—came and went. The coffee was brewed, the rolls reheated and the casserole bubbling. But where were our guests? Finally my husband picked up his cell phone to give them a call. Only then did he discover a “missed call. They had phoned two hours earlier to say that the husband had been unexpectedly called in to work, but we had not heard the phone. They apologized profusely and said they hoped we could re-schedule for another weekend. Although my husband and I enjoyed the beautiful table, good food and relaxing conversation, we missed our guests.
I wonder how many times Jesus waits for us to come into His presence but we don’t arrive. He is there but we have become busy with other things. Or perhaps we don’t think meeting with Him is quite as important as the many items on our lists. Surely He understands that there is so much to do. We can always “re-schedule.
David used picturesque language to describe God’s preparations for our times together: “you prepared a table before me. We know there will be delicious food, both the milk and meat from
When we come into His presence, He speaks: “Peace be with you.
Lord, forgive me for the times I have not responded willingly to your invitation to be in your presence. And thank you for your grace which continues to extend that invitation.
